Chapter 14

The ferry was just docking as Reece paid for their ride back to Seattle. The return ferry was little more than half full. A mass of twinkling city lights in the night skies reflected off the water as they strolled the observation deck. Jordan slipped her arm through Reece’s as they stood at the railing, watching a tanker slide up Puget Sound, bound for the open waters of the Pacific Ocean.

“Will that ship pass Greysome Point on its way out to sea?”

Jordan asked.

“Yes, probably. I get a lot of ships gliding along the horizon on their way to Japan, China, Alaska, even down to California.”

“Could you see them from the upstairs windows of the cabin?”

Jordan asked cautiously.

“Yeah,” Reece replied, keeping her eyes on the passing ship.

“What’s up there on the second floor?”

“Another bedroom and bathroom.”

“Was it the master bedroom?” Jordan asked carefully.

Reece nodded.

“Tell me about it,” Jordan asked, as they moved on down the railing.

Reece took a deep preparatory breath deciding if she wanted to answer.

“I had a darkroom put in right off the master bedroom. I used to get these wild ideas in the middle of the night. I stayed up all night one time trying to enlarge a photograph on pink photo paper.” She shook her head and laughed.

“Do you still go up there?”

“Just to the darkroom.”

“Is that where you had the accident?”

Reece swallowed hard and squinted out over the water.

“No,” she replied, lost in thought. Jordan squeezed her hand, watching her eyes narrow as she seemed to relive the moment.

“That was at our house in Redmond. I sold it. It was too big.”

A blast from the ferry whistle brought them both back to reality.

Reece took Jordan’s hand as they walked down the stairs to the car deck. The rows of traffic filed off and dissipated into the city streets. Reece headed for Jordan’s apartment in Kirkland.

“I had a lovely time,” Jordan said. “I’m glad you came to the office today.”

“Me too,” Reece said.

“Will you come by again soon?”

“Probably,” Reece replied, smiling coyly at her.

“When?” Jordan asked.

“I don’t know. Do I need an appointment?”

“No,” she replied softly. “Oh, turn here, on Allison. Last building on the left.” She dug in her pocket for her keys. Reece pulled into the driveway and turned off the engine. They sat staring at one another for an awkwardly long moment. Jordan fidgeted nervously with her keys, feeling like a teenager on her first date, wondering if she should expect a good night kiss. She lowered her eyes and unbuckled her seatbelt. As she reached for the door handle, Reece placed a hand on her arm to stop her.

“I had the most fantastic time tonight,” Reece said, still holding Jordan’s arm.

Jordan looked up at her, fully aware of an undercurrent of passion growing within her. She could feel her chest tighten and her breath quicken as Reece touched her.

“The most fantastic time,” Reece repeated softly, looking deep into Jordan’s eyes.
